Getting from Whitney Portal and Lone
Pine to Las Vegas

1. Shuttle
from the Portal to anywhere in Las Vegas on any day of the week.

from the Portal to Ridgecrest, then take a rental car to Las Vegas.

from the Portal, 2 buses to Ridgecrest on MWF, rental car to Las Vegas.

from the Portal, take 2 buses to Las Vegas on Mon., Wed., or Fri. only.
These options are ranked from high to low in terms of time-savings, convenience, and dollar cost. Conversely, they are ranked from lowest to highest in terms of the time cost.
Four Travel Options:
1. Shuttle from the Portal to anywhere in Las Vegas on any day of the week
The Mt. Whitney Shuttle Service can pick you up from Whitney Portal or Lone Pine and take you directly to your choice of destinations in Las Vegas, such as going to the airport, the downtown bus terminal, a hotel, or a casino on any day of the week. Advance reservations are strongly recommended. The LV airport is at least a 4 ½ to 6 ½ hour, 300+ mile drive from Lone Pine depending upon the route taken, so it is at least a 9 to 13-hour, 600+ mile round trip for the driver and van.
2. Shuttle from the Portal to Ridgecrest, then take a rental car to Las Vegas.
The Mt. Whitney Shuttle can pick you up from Whitney Portal or Lone Pine and take you directly to the Avis car rental agency in Ridgecrest on any day of the week. (Avis is the only agency in the area that will let you take one-way car rentals to almost any location in the continental U.S.) Advance reservations are required for one-way rentals and are best arranged through the Ridgecrest office (760-446-5556) instead of using the nationwide system. Please tell them that the Mt. Whitney Shuttle Service referred you to them. Then, drive your rental car to Las Vegas.
3. Shuttle
from the Portal, 2 buses to Ridgecrest on MWF, rental car to Las Vegas.
The Mt. Whitney Shuttle Service
can pick you up by 9:15 a.m. from Whitney Portal and take you to Lone Pine. On Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings, you
can take the CREST-South bus that leaves Lone Pine at 10:10 a.m. to
Inyokern for $15.50. The City Transit bus comes out to meet the CREST bus at
11:30 a.m. A bus pass for the short ride from Inyokern to Ridgecrest costs
$2.50. Contact the City Finance Department at (760)
499-5020 for passes. For
specific questions, contact City Transit at (760) 499-5040. The City
Transit bus will stop for you at the Carriage Inn complex at the corner of
China Lake Blvd. and Drummond where the Avis office is located.
4. Shuttle
from the Portal, take 2 buses to Las Vegas on Mon., Wed., or Fri. only.
The Mt. Whitney Shuttle Service can pick you up by 9:15 a.m. from Whitney Portal and take you to Lone Pine. On Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings, you can take the CREST-South bus that leaves Lone Pine at 10:10 a.m. to Mojave for $18.50. It will drop you off at Carl’s Jr. at 12:30 p.m.
Walk two and a half blocks north to McDonald’s. A Greyhound bus (#6007) going to Los Angeles will stop there shortly before 2:00 p.m. and an Orange Belt Stages (OBS) will stop there a few minutes later. Avoid them. Take the Greyhound bus (#6008) going to Las Vegas that departs at 2:05 p.m. It arrives in Las Vegas at 6:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance of the travel date because no ticketing facilities are available at the bus stop. Purchases must be made by phone or at a Greyhound bus terminal because Mojave does not even show up on the Greyhound online reservation system.
If you are going to be taking a flight out of Las Vegas, then take your choice of ground transportation methods from the Downtown Bus Terminal to the airport.
